How to Change Windscreen Wipers — 5 Minute Job

wiper blades

Worn wiper blades are one of the simplest and cheapest maintenance jobs — yet so many drivers ignore them until they can barely see in the rain. Replacement blades typically cost £8–£25 and take minutes to fit.

Signs Your Wipers Need Replacing

  • Streaking — leaving bands of water across the screen
  • Squeaking or chattering
  • Smearing rather than clearing water
  • Skipping or juddering movement
  • Visible cracking or splitting on the rubber blade

Finding the Right Wiper Blades

Wiper blades are not universal — the driver’s and passenger’s sides are often different lengths. Check your owner’s manual or use the fitting guide available at any motor factor or online retailer (Halfords, Amazon, etc.). You’ll need the year, make, and model of your car.

How to Change Them

Step 1: Lift the wiper arm away from the screen until it locks in the raised position. Be careful — if it snaps back without a blade fitted, it can crack the windscreen.

Step 2: Look for the release tab where the blade connects to the arm. Most blades have a hook-style connector — press the tab and pivot the blade downward to unhook it.

Step 3: Slide the new blade onto the hook until it clicks into place. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s secure.

Step 4: Lower the arm back to the screen carefully. Repeat for the other side.

Tip: Wiper blades should be replaced every 6–12 months, or sooner if you notice reduced performance. Don’t forget the rear wiper if your car has one!
